I have always had a fascination with the facades of old buildings. This painting was inspired by a storefront in Navasota Texas, a town about 50 – 60 miles northwest of Houston. I adjusted the façade to emphasize the horizontal strips that form the basis of this painting. These horizontals contrast with the three vertical windows. And then the diagonal shadows of the late morning sun raking across the surface breakup the monotony of right angles.
I wanted the picture to have a strong abstract composition with a sense of permanence instead of a momentary snapshot.
The title is an adaption of Edward Hopper's “Early Sunday Morning”, whose influence seems near impossible to escape when painting such subjects.
